Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have entered Hadramout province and secured the capital, Mukalla, after clashes with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC).
The fighting followed the STC’s December takeover of Hadramout and al-Mahra, a move widely seen as a strategic miscalculation.
The STC has since agreed to Saudi-sponsored talks in Riyadh after suffering battlefield setbacks.
Hadramout is strategically vital, bordering Saudi Arabia and home to key ports, making it central to Riyadh’s national security.
Saudi Arabia has reinforced support for the internationally recognised Yemeni government led by Rashad al-Alimi.
The talks aim to prevent further fragmentation and avert a slide into wider instability in Yemen.
