Gaza athletes defy war scars as marathon returns to coastal road

Al-Rashid road in Gaza, once a symbol of fear and displacement, has hosted a marathon amid a fragile ceasefire.
More than 200 athletes took part, running not to escape danger but to reclaim a sense of normal life.
During the war, sport had nearly disappeared due to widespread destruction, famine and loss.
Athletes say they hope to once again represent Palestine internationally despite ongoing restrictions.
Israel’s war has killed hundreds of athletes and prevented many from competing abroad due to border closures.
For participants, the marathon is both a sporting event and a way to cope with trauma.

Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum reports from Gaza City.
